Venezuelan opposition politician María Corina Machado spoke out firmly and in solidarity following the attack against Colombian senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, which occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, June 7, in Bogotá. Through her X account (formerly Twitter), the leader expressed her categorical condemnation of the attack, sent a message of support to the politician's family, and offered prayers for his speedy recovery.
“We condemn with all our strength the criminal attack against Miguel Uribe today in Bogotá,” Machado wrote. He added that Venezuelans were joining forces and praying “for his life and full recovery,” while extending his solidarity with María Claudia Tarazona, Uribe’s wife, their children, and the Colombian people. “May God protect Miguel and our people,” the message concluded, quickly garnering thousands of interactions on the social network.

The Venezuelan leader's statement came just hours after it was confirmed that Miguel Uribe had been the victim of an armed attack while participating in a campaign event in the Modelia-Fontibón neighborhood, west of Bogotá. According to official information, a 15-year-old boy opened fire on the politician as he greeted supporters. Uribe was hit by two gunshots, one to the head and one to the chest.

The senator was initially taken to the Medicentro Clinic, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to the Santa Fe Foundation, where he remains in critical condition. Authorities confirmed the capture of the alleged attacker and offered a reward of up to 3 billion pesos for information leading to the identification of the masterminds of the attack.

The attack has generated strong condemnation both within and outside the country. Various Colombian political sectors condemned the incident and called for respect for life and democracy. President Gustavo Petro canceled an international trip and spoke out against the attack, as did figures such as Álvaro Uribe Vélez and Juan Manuel Santos, who agreed that it was an act that directly undermines the electoral process and institutional stability.
